Customs officials at Jaipur International Airport on Thursday recovered about 370 grams of gold worth more than Rs 19 lakh from a passenger arriving from Dubai.
According to customs, the passenger was intercepted and pursued as suspicious activity and caught outside the airport when he handed his luggage, including wearing shoes, to someone else who had come to collect them.
“The passenger was asked why he handed over his baggage to the recipient, but he could not give a satisfactory explanation, so Customs decided to search the passenger and his recipient personally. During the search of the Passenger, yellowish granular paste was packed in two transparent polyethylene capsules. found wrapped in hard paper, duly hidden in the shoes,” customs said.
While making the statement, the passenger admitted that the person to whom he handed over the goods had come to collect them. 369,900 grams of gold with a purity of 99.50 percent, worth 19,45,674 rupees, was extracted from the paste and seized according to the provisions of the Customs Act.
Further investigation is underway.
