The Greek national was employed as a second officer on board the merchant vessel Galini.
New Delhi:
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) said on Monday it was coordinating the rescue of a Greek national who fell from a merchant ship in the Arabian sea near Lakshadweep.
On the morning of Feb. 27, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Mumbai received a distress call from merchant vessel Galini when it was about 625 nautical miles west of Agatti Island in Lakshadweep, the ICG said in a statement.
The ICG’s MRCC “coordinated the recovery of the man overboard (MOB)” named Papadopoulous Donysis, a Greek citizen serving as second officer aboard Galini, it noted.
The MRCC promptly diverted the merchant vessel Barzan to Donysis’ position, as it was the closest vessel (60 nautical miles), the Coast Guard said.
During constant searches in and around the zero point, Barzan reported seeing Donysis and was immediately on his way to recovery, it said.
“Following a successful recovery of the Greek national, the recovered person has been informed that the recovered person is in good health and stable,” the statement said.
