Ahmedabad:
A gang of thieves traveling in a truck allegedly attempted to kill police officers by repeatedly attempting to ram into their patrol car during a chase on a highway on the outskirts of the city of Gujarat in Vadodara, police said Thursday.
Although the PCR (Police Control Room) van had an accident during the chase on Wednesday, injuring the driver, another vehicle belonging to the Vadodara City Police eventually managed to stop the truck and arrest two of the five thieves, who stolen tires in the truck, said inspector of Nandesari police station SA Karmur.
The incident happened on a day when a police officer on duty as a vehicle control officer was shot down by a truck in the state’s Anand district.
In the accident, PCR driver Ramdas Meda was injured in the face and chest when the police vehicle slammed into a partition wall during the chase, Mr Karmur said.
The arrested persons were identified as truck driver Yunus Alam and his accomplice Mohsin Mitha, both residents of Godhra town in Panchmahal district.
Three others, who were in the truck during the chase, managed to flee, the inspector said, adding an FIR under sections 307 (attempted murder) and 332 (causing pain to deter officer from his duties) of the IPC has been filed against the perpetrators.
“When they received a wireless message from the control room about a suspicious truck, PCR driver Meda and an officer named Jayesh were watching the highway and saw it around 6 a.m. Wednesday. Although the officer waved his hand like a gesture to stop, the truck driver rushed away towards Anand,” Mr Karmur said.
The police van started chasing the truck, he said.
“On hearing that they were being chased by the police, the truck driver deliberately steered the truck sideways to hit the PCR bus when our driver tried to overtake and block the road,” Mr Karmur said.
After some distance, the truck driver made a U-turn in front of Anand and started driving towards the town of Vadodara, the police officer said.
When Meda tried to overtake again, the truck driver, accompanied by another person watching the PCR bus, again sent the truck close to the police vehicle to hit it, Mr Karmur said.
“The truck came dangerously close to the van, forcing the driver to brake. The police vehicle hit the partition, injuring the driver. Later, Vadodara City Police sent another van, which managed to stop the truck. Two of the gang members were arrested and we found stolen tires in the truck,” he said.
