President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi wished the people of India Wednesday on the birthday of the Bhakti movement poet-saint Guru Ravidas, who worked religiously to reform society and remove prejudices from the caste system. President Kovind said the great saint Guru Ravidas tirelessly broadcast the message of equality and affection and against discrimination. “Let’s all take the path shown by Guru Ravidas Ji to contribute to building a society based on equality, harmony and coordination,” he tweeted in Hindi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Guru Ravidas Vishram Dham temple in Delhi and prayed to the saint. There he joined other devotees in the ‘Shabad Kirtan’. A tweet from the prime minister shows how he performs the ‘aarti’ in the temple. He also wished “Happy Ravidas Jayanti” to all Indians.

Guru Ravidas Jayanti is the birthday of Guru Ravidas which is mainly celebrated in Northern India including Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Chandigarh. It is celebrated on Magh Poornima, the day of the full moon in the month of Magh. This year it is on February 16.
