Hyderabad:
A mob of angry protesters in the city of Amalapuram in Andhra Pradesh set fire to the home of Transport Minister P Viswarup on Tuesday over the proposal to rename the newly created Konaseema district to BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.
The minister and his family were brought to safety by the police.
A police car and a bus belonging to an educational institution were also set on fire. Several police officers were injured by the stones thrown by the protesters.
“It is unfortunate that more than 20 police officers were injured in the incident. We will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice,” the interior minister said.
On April 4, the new Konaseema neighborhood was carved out of the former East Godavari.
Last week, the state government issued a preliminary notice to rename Konaseema to BR Ambedkar Konaseema district and asked the people for any objections.
