New Delhi:
The Lok Sabha Parliamentary Privileges Committee has summoned Maharashtra’s chief secretary, the director-general of police and the Mumbai police commissioner to appear before them on June 15 over the privilege violation complaint by MP Navneet Rana.
The committee headed by BJP MP Sunil Singh is set to hear the case regarding the violation of the privilege charge by Maharashtra MP Navneet Rana next week.
The commission has summoned several officers from Maharashtra after Ms Rana complained about this to the Lok Sabha speaker.
The Amravati MP had written to Parliament’s Privileges and Ethics Committee on charges of violation of privileges and alleged illegal arrest and inhumane treatment of her at Khar Police Station.
Ms. Rana appeared before the Privilege Commission on May 23 to tell her side of the story.
On April 25, Navneet Rana lodged a complaint of serious violation of privilege with Lok Sabha Chairman Om Birla, who further referred it to the Privilege Committee.
Navneet Rana appeared before the Parliamentary Committee on Privileges on May 23 on charges of “clearly unlawful arrest and the resulting inhumane treatment imposed on her at the Khar Police Station, Mumbai.”
Following this, the Maharashtra Privilege Committee summoned Chief Secretary Manu Kumar Srivastava, Director General of Police Rajnish Seth, Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey and Superintendent of Women District Prison, Byculla (Mumbai) Yashwant Bhanudas.
Navneet Rana along with her MLA husband Ravi Rana were arrested from their Mumbai residence on April 23 after they stated that they would recite the Hanuman Chalisa outside Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s residence in Bandra.
They were on trial in two FIRs filed on charges of sedition, fostering enmity and assaulting an official to prevent the discharge of duty.
The Ranas were released on bail on May 4 and released from prison the following day.
