In the wake of the hospital fire in Jabalpur, which claimed eight lives, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, has ordered the government to review the fire safety mechanisms of all hospitals in the state.
He also ordered the suspension of Jabalpur’s chief medical and health officer (CMHO) and fire safety officer following Monday’s fire at New Life Multi-specialty Hospital that killed eight people, including four patients, and injured five others.
“Perform an inspection of all hospitals in the state and if any discrepancy is found in the fire safety measures, immediately cancel the license of such hospitals. It is imperative to obtain a fire NOC, electrical safety and construction permit for the hospitals to prevent such incidents from happening again,” Chouhan said.
He addressed senior ministers and officials at a virtual meeting held Tuesday evening to discuss the situation after the fire incident in Jabalpur.
State Minister of Urban Administration and Development Bhupendra Singh, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Dr Prabhu Ram Choudhary, Minister of Medical Education Vishvas Sarang were among those who attended the meeting, an official said on Wednesday.
The divisional commissioner of Jabalpur and other officials were also present.
During the meeting, the prime minister ordered the suspension of Jabalpur’s CMHO Ratnesh Kurariaya and fire safety officer Kushlesh Thakur, the official said.
Chouhan also called for short- and long-term fire safety policies to be drawn up.
“There should be a unified policy for hospitals, hotels and multi-storey buildings,” he said, instructing concerned departments to conduct joint inspections to ensure all security measures are in place.
The preliminary investigation into the tragedy of the hospital fire in Jabalpur has revealed several safety deficiencies and determined that the certificate of no objection (NOC) of the facility of New Life Multi-Speciality Hospital had expired, Interior Minister Narottam Mishra said on Tuesday. .
