A schoolboy reportedly died by suicide after being beaten up for wearing a ‘bindi’ on her forehead at a school in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad, officials said.
The chairman of the National Commission for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (NCPCR), Priyank Kanoongo, said in a tweet on Tuesday that a student allegedly committed suicide after being beaten up for going to school with a ‘bindi’ .
He said that the NCPCR has taken note of the matter and the team will go to Dhandbad for investigation.
The incident took place in Tetulmari district of Dhanbad on Monday. Where the parents of the deceased girl and local residents reportedly held a protest against the school management on Tuesday, the police have launched an investigation and taken action.
Uttam Mukherjee, Chairman of Child Welfare Committee (CWC), Dhanbad, Jharkhand, said the accused teacher has been arrested by the police after the incident came to light.
“It is a serious matter. The school is also not affiliated with the CBSE board. I told the District Education Officer. I met the victim’s family today. The suspect has been arrested,” Mukherjee said in a tweet while he replied to the NCPCR Chairman.
Earlier, a student preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) was reported to have committed suicide in Kota in Rajasthan, officials said on Sunday.
According to Circle Inspector of Police (CI) Kota Paramjit Singh, police have received information about the death of a student due to suicide in Kota’s Mahaveer Nagar.
The official also stated that the reason for the suicide has not been determined and that the student was preparing for the IIT-JEE.
