Narowal, Punjab:
The Kartarpur Corridor, which connects Pakistan’s historic Gurdwara Darbar Sahib to Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak in Gurdaspur district, will reopen to pilgrims on Tuesday as the flooding situation near the India-Pakistan border eases.
On Monday evening, Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Border Range Amritsar, Narinder Bhargav visited the corridor to assess the situation.
“A flood-like situation had developed near the Indo-Pak border due to the rise in water level of the Ravi river. Due to this, the yatra was temporarily postponed,” he said.
In addition, Gurdaspur Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal also visited the Kartarpur Corridor and said that a decision has been made to reopen the corridor tomorrow.
“Kartarpur Corridor has been flooded in recent days due to rising water level of Ravi River. A few structures and roads have been damaged. All officials inspected it today. The roads on the Indian side have been repaired. All damage has been repaired,” DCP Aggarwal told ANI.
“We have also been told that the situation is okay even on the Pakistani side. In the interest of the pilgrims, it has been decided to reopen the corridor tomorrow, 25 July. 132 pilgrims have registered for tomorrow. Still, they have been advised to avoid it if they can re-register later…” added the Gurdaspur DCP.
An agreement between the Government of India and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for facilitating pilgrims to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Pakistan was signed on 24 October 2019, to meet the long standing demand of Indian citizens and Overseas Citizens of India, to have easy and smooth access to the holy Gurudwara and to make the corridor operational in time for the 550th birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji.
Kartarpur Corridor was inaugurated on November 9, 2019. It remains functional on all seven days of the week.
