Kannur:
A private clothing unit in the district, which has recently been in the news for making uniforms for the Israeli police, announced on Friday a temporary freeze on new orders from the force in light of the recent bombings of hospitals in Palestine.
Thomas Olickal, director of Maryan Apparel Pvt Limited, said the company has made the decision not to take new orders from the Israeli police until the war in Gaza is stopped.
Maryan Apparel Pvt Limited in the district makes the elegant light blue long-sleeved uniform shirts of the Israel Police.
“We have been making uniforms for the Israeli police since 2015. The Hamas attack killing civilians cannot be accepted. In the same way, Israel’s revenge cannot be accepted either. Denying food and water to more than 25 million people, bombing hospitals, killing innocent women and children and the like cannot be accepted at all. We want the war to end and peace to prevail,” Olickal said in a video message.
He said his company will honor existing contracts according to the international agreement, but has decided not to accept new orders until the war is over.
“We ask everyone to stop the war. The Israeli army will not have a shortage of uniforms because of our decision. But this is a moral decision. The bombing of the hospitals cannot be accepted… We have decided to temporarily suspend further orders to take.” he added.
War has broken out between Israel and Palestine after Hamas militants launched a surprise attack on Israel from Gaza earlier this month.
The company was launched here in 2006 at the state-run Kinfra Park and specializes in the uniforms of army men, police personnel, security guards and healthcare workers from various countries around the world.
It also supplies school uniforms, dresses for supermarket staff, doctor’s coats, overalls, corporate clothing, and so on.
The garment unit was set up in Kannur with an aim to provide employment to local people who had been left jobless due to the demise of the traditional ‘beedi’ sector there.
Mr Olickal had previously said that Israeli police had approached his company after discovering that they specialized in making uniforms.
The war that began on October 7 has become the deadliest of five Gaza wars for both sides.
