In a case of medical negligence, a half-meter item remained left in the stomach of a woman during a caesarean section by doctors from a private hospital in Greater Noida in 2023, her family and health officials said.
The incident recently came to light after the woman, who complained about frequent stomach pain, underwent surgery to the recommendation of doctors in another hospital.
According to the wife's husband Vikas Varma, she was pregnant and was admitted to the Bakson Hospital, under Knowledge Park Police Station Area, in Greater Noida on November 14, 2003 for delivery. Initially a normal delivery was planned for his wife, Anshul, but doctors later advised to opt for surgery, he said.
“After the operation, when she returned home, she started complaining about stomach pain that was reportedly due to the stitches. We kept looking for treatment and gave her painkillers and medicines all the time, but in vain. None of the doctors could detect the reason behind the pain,” he said.
“We recently took Anshul to the Kailash Hospital – another private hospital – where she was asked to undergo surgery. During the operation a half -meter garment was found from her body,” he added.
Mr. Varma said that doctors in the Kailash Hospital told him that his wife could have die if the garment had stayed in her belly longer. I insist on the authorities to start strict action against the doctors in the Bakson Hospital, “he added.

Gautam Buddha Nagar Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Narendra Kumar said he received a complaint from Mr. Varma. “He said that a piece of clothing was found in his wife's stomach. A committee will investigate the incident and submit a report.”
If an expired has been found, a case is registered against the negligent, Mr Kumar added.
Earlier in February, a doctor reportedly left a surgical mop in a woman's stomach during a caesarean section in a hospital in Karnataka's Puttur.
In March 2023, the family members of a 58-year-old man accused a doctor in the Badaun of Uttar Pradesh of operating on him without their permission and leaving a canvas in his stomach during the operation.
In 2021 a woman fell ill after doctors in a Shahjahanpur Government Hospital left a piece of cloth in her belly during a caesarean section. She died during treatment in a Lucknow Hospital.
