The price of lemon has risen to Rs 200 per kilogram in Rajkot in Gujarat.
Rajkot, Gujarat:
Lemon prices have skyrocketed in Rajkot in Gujarat due to shortage of supplies and an increase in demand for the citrus fruit.
Lemons are currently being sold for Rs 200 per kg, compared to the previous rates of Rs 50-60 per kg.
“The price of lemon is almost Rs 200/kg. It used to be around Rs 50-60/kg. We have to fit everything into a budget. But this price increase is impacting our ‘kitchen budget’. We don’t know when the prices will go up down,” a customer told ANI news agency.
As the temperature rises, people prefer to include lemon in their diet as they are a rich source of vitamin C and help to stay hydrated while aiding digestion. Increased consumption and shortage of supply have pushed the prices of lemons up.
“The prices of almost every vegetable have increased. But this is more than we expected. It is difficult for a middle class customer to buy such expensive vegetables. We cannot buy lemons in large quantities like we used to buy. This increase is almost the double the prices we paid in March last year, I don’t know what will happen in April-May,” said buyer Himanshu.
“We used to buy one kg of lemons a week, but now we have to reduce that to 250 or 500 grams because of price increases. That has consequences for our costs,” says Pinal Patel, another buyer.
The price increase also affects traders, as buyers are forced to buy lemons in fewer quantities after a sudden price increase. The price increases have thus affected both traders and buyers.
