Ahmedabad:
A mob of about 100 people set fire to two private buses carrying employees of a company on the outskirts of Bharuch town in Gujarat after one of the vehicles mowed down and killed an elderly man, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place on the Dahej bypass on Monday night, but no one was injured in the mob violence as all the passengers of the two buses of the Dahej-based company got off before the vehicles were set on fire, said Bharuch inspector AK Bharwad .
Police say one of the buses hit an elderly woman near Sherpura village in Bharuch on Monday night.
Police have filed two separate FIRs in connection with the man’s death and the Mafia setting busses on fire.
“Some local residents became angry when an elderly person, Ismail Manchwala (65), died after being hit by one of the company buses at the Sherpur bus stop around 9pm,” said Mr Bharwad.
“Later, the two buses were set on fire by a crowd of about 100 local residents. No one was injured as all company employees quickly came down,” the official said.
According to one of the FIRs, Manchwala, a resident of Sherpura village, was run over by one of the buses while crossing the road at the bus stop. The man suffered a head injury and died on the spot.
The unknown bus driver, who fled after the accident, has been reported for careless driving and death by negligence.
“A few angry Sherpura residents gathered on the road and set fire to that bus after all the employees got off. They then stopped another company bus and took the keys after attacking the driver and some workers. The crowd stabbed that bus also on fire after all the workers have crashed,” said Mr Bharwa.
A separate FIR on charges of assault and rioting was registered against a crowd of about 100 people, the official said.
After being warned, the local fire brigade rushed to the spot and doused the flames, he said.
No arrests have been made so far, the official said.
