Bombay:
A high-level probe has been ordered after many parts of Mumbai suffered a power outage on Sunday morning, Maharashtra’s Energy Minister Nitin Raut said.
Many areas in the financial capital, including residential areas of Dadar, Matunga and Sion, among others, experienced power outages for more than an hour in the morning. Power began to be restored from 11 a.m., officials had said.
The power outage also led to the interruption of local train services on the Western Railway between Churchgate and Andheri stations.
In a statement, Mr Raut said he was in constant contact with concerned officials, including those of Tata Power, throughout the day.
“I instructed officials to restore power as soon as possible and also regularly took stock of work in progress. Power was restored in 70 minutes. The government has taken serious note of the incident and a high-level probe has been ordered. The guilty will be punished,” the minister said.
Earlier in the day, officials had blamed the disruption to Tata Power’s supplies for the problems.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), the public energy and transportation company that provides power to the city, said a 220 kV transmission line from Mulund to Trombay had failed, depriving consumers of power.
Power outages are rare in Mumbai and are satellite towns with power grids equipped to provide electricity 24 hours a day.
