A man broke into Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s home in the south of Kolkata’s Kalighat area in the early hours of Sunday, police said.
The incident caused a security scare and questions were raised about how he got past the large number of staff guarding the prime minister’s private residence and spending a night in the house without anyone noticing.
The man climbed a wall of Mrs Banerjee’s home at 34B Harish Chatterjee Street to enter around 1 a.m., police said.
He stayed in the house, spent the night in a corner and was not noticed by security personnel until the morning, a senior police officer said.
“They have informed the Kalighat Police Station that the man has been arrested,” he told Press Trust of India.
Police said it’s still unclear why he broke into the house, and judging by his appearance, “he appears to be somewhat mentally unstable.”
“We’re talking to him and trying to find out his whereabouts. We’re also trying to find out if anyone with a motive ordered him to enter the CM’s home. An investigation is underway,” the officer said.
