Doctors at a hospital in Punjab’s Moga received a shock on Thursday when they found earphones, lockets, screws and even rakhis in his stomach. The 40-year-old was admitted to Medicity Hospital in Moga with high fever and abdominal pain after complaining of nausea for more than two days. Because his stomach pain did not go away, doctors decided to perform an X-ray scan of his abdomen to determine the cause of his pain. The results were disturbing.
The scan showed several metal objects lodged in the man’s stomach. After a three-hour operation, doctors were able to successfully remove the objects from his body.
Among the nearly a hundred items recovered from his stomach were earphones, washers, nuts and bolts, wires, rakhislockets, buttons, wrappers, hair clips, a zipper tag, a marble and a safety pin.
Dr. Ajmer Kalra, the director of the hospital, said this was the first case he had come across and the man had been suffering from stomach problems for two years. Although all items have been removed from his body, the man’s condition is not stable, the doctor said. The items were in his stomach for a long time and that caused other health problems, he added.
The man’s family also said they were surprised by the findings and did not know when or why he consumed the items. His parents had no idea how he managed to eat the items, but said he suffered from mental illness.
They said he complained of stomach pains and couldn’t sleep days before he was admitted to the hospital. They had taken him to several doctors before, but none could diagnose the cause of his pain.
