Conrad Sangma is seeking re-election from the South Tura seat.
Tura:
The Prime Minister of Meghalaya and the National President of the National People’s Party (NPP), Conrad K Sangma, today submitted his nomination papers in Tura for the upcoming parliamentary elections that will take place later this month.
Mr. Sangma submitted his nomination to the returning officer of 51-South Tura and the additional deputy commissioner, Saljong R Marak, to Tura.
Before submitting his nomination, Mr. Sangma visited his father’s grave and was accompanied by his wife in Tura. Conrad Sangma’s father, PA Sangma, was the former Chief Minister of Meghalaya. He passed away in March 2016.
“There is a positive wave for the National People’s Party and the opposition is falling apart day by day,” the prime minister told reporters.
“In this political scenario, the trend shows that the NPP is moving towards an absolute majority, and we are very confident,” he added.
When asked about the issues on which his party is contesting elections, Mr Sangma said: “We are continuing the development work we have done over the past five years, and the general work done in various sectors. The foundations have been laid. and it’s time to take things to the next level and maintain its importance to ensure we can achieve those goals.”
“All I said was that Trinamool Congress is a party that comes from West Bengal, and that is a fact. There is nothing wrong with that,” Sangma responded to the accusation of racist remarks by the Trinamool Congress leader.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) is an “outside party and it is based on an analogy where Mamata Banerjee herself said in the last election in West Bengal that BJP and other national parties are outside parties,” he added.
“If we apply the same idea to Meghalaya, then the TMC is an outside party. There is nothing racist about it,” Sangma said.
Conrad Sangma is seeking re-election from the South Tura seat, which he won after being elected chief minister of Meghalaya in the August 2018 by-election.
He received 13,656 votes, defeating closest congressional rival Charlotte W Momin by a margin of over 8,400 votes.
The last date for submitting nominations for the Meghalaya elections is February 7. The nomination review will take place on February 8 and the last date for withdrawing nominations is February 10. The vote will take place on February 27 and the results will be announced. on March 2.
