The SBSP chief has repeatedly claimed that the Bharatiya Janata party will not be able to exceed double digits in eastern Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday, the leader said the BJP is fighting for its existence in these elections.
“The BJP is fighting for its existence in these elections. It has become so frustrated that for the first time in the country’s history, a prime minister had to go on a district trip to campaign for the BJP,” he said.
The final stage of the election for the 403-seat UP Legislative Assembly will be held on March 7. The vote will be held at eight meeting seats in Varanasi. The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
In 2017, the BJP had won six of its eight assembly seats in Varanasi, while its partner Apna Dal (S) had packed one and another had gone to Rajbhar’s SBSP, which was with them at the time.
The BJP had ties to Mr Rajbhar’s party in the run-up to the 2017 parliamentary election in Uttar Pradesh. The SBSP contested eight seats and won four. Mr Rajbhar became a minister in the UP government. But just months later, the leader began accusing the Yogi Adityanath government of neglecting and sidelining his party.
A day after the 2019 Lok Sabha polls concluded, he was expelled from the cabinet. During the Lok Sabha polling campaign, Mr Rajbhar had said that BJP members should be “beaten” with shoes.
