New Delhi:
More than 21,000 private vehicles have been charged with violating designated bus lanes within two months of the launch of an enforcement action by the Delhi government’s Transport Department, officials said Friday.
Nearly 391 DTC buses and 328 cluster buses were sanctioned under the drive effective April 1.
Between April 1 and May 26, 21,820 challans were handed out while 819 violations were recorded by bus drivers.
The violations by bus drivers also include 100 violations by other types of buses. As many as 21,001 private vehicles were sanctioned for lane violations, while 359 vehicles were lifted or towed by authorities.
From May 9, the Transport Department has started issuing challans to private bus operators and drivers for non-compliance with the designated bus lanes.
The third phase of the drive has been delayed and will be completed when the PWD completes the road marking, an official said.
The Transport Department began strict enforcement of lane discipline for buses and freight carriers from April 1, with fines of up to Rs 10,000 and six months imprisonment for errant drivers.
Together with the traffic police, the Transport Department has reserved special lanes to be used only by buses and freight carriers from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Under the drive, in accordance with the directions of the Supreme Court, the first offense of lane discipline attracts a fine of Rs 10,000. The second offense leads to prosecution under the Motor Vehicles Act (MV), the third offense to suspension of the driving license and the fourth to withdrawal of the vehicle licence.
