Bombay:
A 55-year-old man attempted suicide Friday in a Bombay High Court courtroom after a judge dismissed his plea in a property dispute.
However, he was stopped in time by the lawyers present in court.
The incident took place in the courtroom of Justice PD Naik around 1:00 PM.
The judge ordered the man, who was locked in a property dispute with his mother, to vacate his premises under the Senior Citizens Act.
When Judge Naik issued the warrant, the man walked over to him, took a paper-cutter knife from his pocket and tried to cut his own wrist, eyewitnesses said.
Several lawyers around him, including an assistant district attorney, acted quickly and contained him. Police officers present in the courtroom took him to the Azad Maidan Police Station.
Judge Naik, however, asked the police to let the man go.
Police called the man’s relatives to the police station and asked them to take him home, an official said.
The man received first aid and did not require further medical attention, the police officer added.
According to lawyers, the metal detectors at the two entrance gates of the Supreme Court have been out of action for some time, allowing the man to enter the building with a paper cutter.
