Sharad Pawar, head of the Nationalist Congress party, has said he is not in the race to become prime minister, claiming the opposition wants a leadership that would work for the betterment of the country.
Speaking at a condolence meeting for Ram Takawale, the recently deceased vice-chancellor of the University of Pune, Sharad Pawar said the opposition parties could be given a small task of projecting one person as a prime ministerial candidate if they come together.
“I am trying my best to get the opposition together. I am not in the race to be prime minister as I am not running in the next (Lok Sabha) elections,” he told reporters.
On sharing seats with the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT), who are part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi, Pawar said, “Recently, a meeting was held in my hometown. Leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi will decide on this.” “Uddhav Thackeray, Sonia Gandhi or Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge, and I will sit together to discuss more about it,” he said of the seat sharing.
The terms of office of several public bodies in Maharashtra expired in early 2022, but polls were not conducted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Lok Sabha elections are scheduled for 2024 and the polls for the Maharashtra Assembly are also scheduled for the later part of next year.
