Opposition parties have criticized the government for the inauguration of the new parliament building.
New Delhi:
The opening of the new parliament by Prime Minister Narendra Modi – scheduled for May 28 – has sparked a huge political upheaval. Opposition parties have argued that the president, as the “supreme constitutional authority”, should inaugurate it.
Here are the top 10 points in this great story:
The inauguration date has also irked Congress. May 28 is the birthday of VD Savarkar, one of the BJP’s biggest icons, and the Congress said the choice of the date is a “complete insult” to the country’s founding fathers.
Congress has a habit of fomenting controversy where there are none. While the president is the head of state, the prime minister is the head of government and heads parliament on behalf of the government, whose policies are carried out in the form of laws . The president is not a member of either chamber while the prime minister is,” union minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted.
BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia called the congress “useless” and said, “Veer Savarkar is the pride of every Indian. Those who question the date tell them they are unimportant, not even worth the dust on Veer Savarkar’s feet”.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge has accused the government of “repeated disrespect for decency” by not inviting the president and the former president to the inauguration.
“While the former president, Shri Kovind, was not invited to the ceremony of the establishment of the new parliament… India’s president, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, has not been invited to the inauguration of the new parliament building,” Mallikarjun Kharge tweeted .
“She (the president) alone represents the government, the opposition and every citizen. She is India’s first citizen. The inauguration of the new parliament building by her will symbolize the government’s commitment to democratic values and constitutional decency,” read one other of his tweets. .
Other opposition parties have also criticized the government for the inauguration. “Obsession with self-image and cameras trumps decency and norms when it comes to Modi-ji,” said CPI’s D Raja.
“He (Prime Minister Modi) is the head of the executive, not the legislature. We have a separation of powers and the Hon’ble Lok Sabha Chairman and the Rajya Sabha Chairman could have inaugurated (it). with public money, why is the prime minister behaving like his? ‘friends’ sponsored it from their private funds,” tweeted AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi.
The opposition plans to calibrate their stance on the opening at a mega rally they are planning.
The new parliament building can accommodate 888 members in the Lok Sabha chamber and 300 in the Rajya Sabha chamber. At a joint meeting of both Houses, 1,280 members can be accommodated in the Lok Sabha chamber.
