BJP-led NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu is likely to receive her nomination on June 25, sources said on Tuesday.
Droupadi Murmu was named the presidential candidate of the BJP-led NDA on Tuesday. She is a former governor of Jharkhand and a former minister of Odisha.
On the other hand, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh announced today that former Finance and Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha will be the opposition parties’ common candidate in the presidential election, which will take place on July 18, 2022, a statement said.
The last date to submit nominations for the presidential election is June 29, the election will take place on July 18, and votes will be counted on July 21.
Speaking to ANI exclusively by phone, Ms Murmu said she was surprised to hear about her candidacy and couldn’t believe it and noted that she will work under the president’s powers enshrined in the constitution.
She said she will approach members of the electoral college for their support.
“I’m surprised, I couldn’t believe it. I’m grateful, don’t want to speak much (at this stage),” said Droupadi Murmu, a former governor of Jharkhand.
“Whatever powers the president has in the constitution, I will work accordingly,” she said in response to a question about her priorities if elected president.
Asked about the contest with opposition parties that named former union minister Yashwant Sinha their presidential candidate on Tuesday, she said there are candidates in the fray and she will seek the support of MPs and MLAs.
“There are candidates. Our job is to go to the people, contact the members of the electoral college and seek their cooperation. I will ask all parties and states for support,” she said.

The vote for the presidential election will take place on July 18. If elected, she will become India’s first tribal president and the country’s second female president.
Droupadi Murmu is the first presidential candidate from Odisha from a major political party or alliance. She continues to break through barriers and was the first female governor of Jharkhand. She served as Governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021.
Droupadi Murmu, from a poor tribal family in the village of Mayurbhanj, a backward district of Odisha, completed her studies despite difficult circumstances. She taught at Shri Aurobindo Integral Education Centre, Rairangpur.
Born on 20 June 1958, she attended BA at Ramadevi Women’s College Bhubaneswar.
She started her political career as the Vice-President of Rairangpur NAC. Droupadi Murmu was a member of the Odisha Legislative Assembly of Rairangpur from 2000 to 2004. As minister she had portfolios of Transport and Trade, Livestock and Fisheries. She again served as MLA in the Odisha Assembly from 2004 to 2009.
In 2007, the Odisha Assembly honored her with the ‘Nilakantha Award’ for the best MLA. She was a junior assistant in the Irrigation and Energy Department between 1979 and 1983. She has held various organizational positions with the BJP and was Vice President of ST Morcha State in 1997.
Droupadi Murmu was a national executive member of BJP’s ST Morcha from 2013 to 2015 and served as BJP district head of Mayurbhanj (West) in 2010 and 2013. Between 2006 and 2009 she was head of BJP’s ST Morcha in Odisha. She was a member of the National Directorate of BJP ST Morcha from 2002 to 2009.
