Guwahati:
Protests erupted in Assam after the state cabinet approved merging four newly formed districts with the existing ones.
The protesters blocked the roads in Biswanath district for hours. Protests also took place in Bajali district.
They chanted slogans “go back” and demanded that the government withdraw the decision.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday that the cabinet has approved the administrative merger of four newly formed districts with existing districts.
As per the approval of the cabinet, Biswanath district will be merged with Sonitpur; Hojai will be merged with Nagaon; Tamulpur district with Baksa and Bajali district are merged into Barpeta district.
“We are against the demarcation process. Why has the government made such decisions? We are not happy with the government’s behavior,” said one protester.
“We have urged the government to withdraw the decision,” said another.
The government said this has been done in accordance with the Election Commission’s order on demarcation requiring the government of Assam not to make any changes to districts or administrative units from January 1, 2023 as the state will begin the delimitation process.
