Simranjit Singh Mann won Punjab’s Sangrur Lok Sabha bypoll

chandigarh:

Simranjit Singh Mann, the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) candidate who won the bypoll of Sangrur, home of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, attributed his victory to separatist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and said he would raise the issues of “the atrocities of the Indian Army in Kashmir” in Parliament.

Mr Mann, who defeated the Aam Aadmi party, or AAP candidate, said he would also flag the “murder of indigenous tribes in Bihar and Chhattisgarh, whom they called Naxalites”.

Congress expressed concern about his election, and party spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala tweeted. “Democracy today lost in Sangrur”. “Punjab cannot be pushed back into the dead end of violence and terrorism. If what is being reported is true, today democracy has lost in Sangrur,” Surjewala tweeted.

Congress spokesman Jaiveer Shergill tweeted: “Result from Sangrur, Punjab bypolls should act as an alarm bell for all Punjab stakeholders.”

“The mandate given by people is always supreme and this time it has fallen in favor of Simranjit Singh Mann. However, Mann’s ideology has proved toxic to Punjab and our nation in the past. His Khalistani agenda is a threat to the peace and integrity of Punjab and country,” tweeted Congressional Ravneet Singh Bittu.

“It is a victory for our party staff and for the teachings that Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale has given,” Mr Mann said after his victory today, calling on the separatist reportedly backed by Pakistan’s spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence. , or ISI.

“The Sikh community is very upset by the deaths of Deep Singh Sidhu and Sidhu Moose Wala and now the Indian government will not behave in the same way as the Muslims, as their places are questioned, as the Indian army commits atrocities in Kashmir and the daily killing of Muslims,” he told ANI news agency.

“The tribes in Bihar and Chhattisgarh are being shot and called Naxalites. I will meet the candidate running in the presidential election and talk about this,” Mann said.

Mr Mann defeated his AAP rival Gurmail Singh by a margin of over 5,800 votes from the Sangrur seat, ousting AAP from the Lok Sabha.

The 77-year-old is a former MP and the chairman of Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) – unrelated to the larger Shiromani Akali Dal. He was last elected from the same seat in 1999.
