Ottawa:
Canada has taken an important step that will benefit Indian professionals and other foreigners as it expands its work permits to family members of temporary international workers from next year.
While addressing reporters, Canada’s Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Sean Fraser announced that his department will issue work permits to family members of temporary foreign workers on Friday.
Prior to this announcement, spouses were only eligible for a work permit if the main applicant was employed in a highly skilled occupation. This temporary measure aims to improve the emotional well-being, physical health and financial stability of employees by keeping families together. As a result, the employee is expected to better integrate into their overall work environment and community, according to the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada press release.
Beginning in January 2023, Canada will extend the ability to work in Canada to spouses and children of working age through a phased approach for workers at all skill levels through a two-year temporary measure. This includes, for example, families of healthcare, trade and hospitality workers.
As a result of this new approach, it is estimated that family members of more than 200,000 foreign workers could go to work in Canada, providing greater opportunity for both foreign workers seeking employment in Canada and employers serving their labor needs.
“Everywhere I go, employers across the country continue to view a lack of workers as their biggest obstacle. Today’s announcement will help employers find the workers they need to fill their job gaps by extending work permits to family members at all skill levels, resulting in family members of more than 200,000 foreign workers being able to work in Canada. Our government will continue to help employers overcome labor shortages while also supporting workers’ welfare and uniting their families,” said the Canadian minister in a statement.
“Labour is the biggest challenge facing the Canadian tourism industry as we position ourselves for post-pandemic growth. Today, our government is bringing innovative, family-based solutions to solve this problem and help our tourism partners grow to meet global demand to Canadian experiences from coast to coast to coast,” he added.
