West Bengal Prime Minister Mamata Banerjee today declared that she will not let rioters go unpunished and that strict measures will be taken against them.
At a rally in Purba Medinipur district, she alleged that the BJP slandered Lord Ram’s name by organizing violence during Ram Navami processions.
Clashes have been reported during Ram Navami parades in Hooghly and Howrah districts in recent days.
“The BJP is behind the violence in Hooghly and Howrah. They had hired ‘goondas’ from other states to unleash violence in Bengal, which is not in our culture. They vilify the Hindu religion by pitting one community against another. But rioters have no religion, they are just political idiots. I appeal to everyone to keep calm,” she said.
She took a look at Home Minister Amit Shah, without mentioning him by name, she said: “The BJP said that if the party comes to power in Bihar, it would hang rioters upside down. Then why are they doing that not with their goondas inciting trouble in Bengal? Charity begins at home.”
Amit Shah had made the remark at a recent public gathering in Bihar’s Nawada district, which also witnessed communal clashes during Ram Navami.
She took potshots at the CPI (M) and claimed that ‘Baam’ (left) and ‘Ram’ (BJP) have teamed up against the TMC.
