Tributes poured in for legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar who passed away this morning at the age of 92. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to share the sad news, saying he is “incomprehensibly haunted”.
“The kind and caring Lata didic has left us. She leaves a void in our country that cannot be filled. Generations to come will remember her as a faithful man of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to enchant people,” he tweeted.
Prime Minister Modi will attend the singer’s state funeral in Mumbai. “I’m leaving for Mumbai in a while to pay my last respects to Lata didic,” he said.

The megastar was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai on January 8 after being diagnosed with COVID-19 and pneumonia. Although she had recovered from Covid, the singer was given a ventilator after her condition worsened on Saturday.
A two-day national mourning will be celebrated in memory of Lata Mangeshkar, the government has said.
Lata Mangeshkar’s songs brought out different emotions, the prime minister said in another tweet. “She witnessed the transitions of the Indian film world for decades. In addition to films, she was always passionate about the growth of India. She always wanted to see a strong and developed India,” he added.

PM Modi said: “I consider it an honor that I have always received tremendous affection from Lata Didi. My interactions with her will remain unforgettable. I mourn the passing of Lata Didi with my fellow Indians. I spoke with her family and expressed her condolences . Om Shantic.”
In a virtual speech ahead of the parliamentary elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Prime Minister began his speech by commemorating the singer, saying: “She was a blessing to humanity, her voice will remain with us forever”.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said Lata Mangeshkar was India’s most beloved voice for decades. “Her golden voice is immortal and will continue to reverberate in the hearts of her fans. My condolences to her family, friends and fans,” he tweeted.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari tweeted after visiting Breach Candy Hospital: “Shirmor Swar Kokila Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, the proud and music world of the country. ji’s death is very sad. My sincere tribute to the holy soul. Her passing is an irreparable loss to the country. She was always an inspiration to all music seekers”.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also expressed his condolences. “Sad to hear about the demise of Swar Kokila, Lata Mangeshkar ji. She has enriched our lives for decades with her soulful voice. The nightingale of India has passed away, but she will live on in our hearts forever. Om Shanti,‘ tweeted Mr Joshi.
Ms. Mangeshkar was a playback singer and occasional music composer and popularly known as “Nightingale of India” for her melodious voice. Her body of work spanned devotional and classical albums and included approximately 27,000 songs in dozens of languages, including English, Russian, Dutch and Swahili.
