An underage girl and her 21-year-old boyfriend “died consuming poison when summoned to a police station” in Tripura’s Gomati district, an officer said Monday.
The duo were subpoenaed last Friday over a complaint filed by the 17-year-old girl’s father, he said.
Ananda Chakma, a resident of the Sabroom subsection of South Tripura, had been in a relationship with the girl from Dhalai district for some time, the officer said.
They recently ran away after the girl’s father lodged a complaint with Gandacherra Police Station in Dhalai district, alleging that her daughter had been kidnapped.
Following the complaint, police carried out house searches and found the couple in Kaptali, about 30 km from Silacherra Police Station in Gomati District.
Accordingly, the couple and their parents were subpoenaed on Friday, Silacherra Police Department Prosecutor (OC) Srikanta Rudrapaul told PTI on Monday.
“Ahead of trouble, the duo had consumed poison. They vomited at the police station,” he said.
“Both were rushed to hospitals. The girl died Sunday night at the Gomati district hospital, while the boy died Monday at GBP Agartala Hospital. No case has been registered in connection with the tragic incident,” he added.
