New Delhi:
The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the states of Delhi's National Capital Region (NCR) to take a final call on the ban on use of firecrackers throughout the year.
A bench of Justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih asked the government of Delhi and other NCR states — Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan — to register their decisions before the top court.
The bench said a ban is necessary not only to combat air pollution but also noise pollution.
It noted that the issue regarding ban on use of firecrackers in NCR states is yet to be addressed.
“We direct the concerned state governments to post their decisions on complete ban on use of firecrackers throughout the year,” the bench said.
The top court added that when it refers to a ban on the use of fireworks, it also includes a ban on their production, storage, sale and distribution.
The top court was hearing the case related to air pollution in the national capital.
To reduce air pollution, it also suggested that government departments should adopt electric vehicles.
The top court also ordered that its earlier order on Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) remain in force until further orders and also directed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CQAM) to continue implementation of the amended measures to improve air quality in Delhi to improve. .
