A man has been arrested for smuggling banned rare species of seahorses in Ramanathapuram district, the forestry department said on Tuesday.
The suspect has been identified as Naganathan (57) from the North Street neighborhood of Devipatnam.
The ranger said the suspect was caught while patrolling the Suriyakudi area of Ramanathapuram.
A total of 90 seahorses and a vehicle were recovered from the defendant.
The suspect had a bag with him that turned out to contain a rare species of seahorse.
“It was revealed that he was Naganathan (57) from the North Street area of Devipatnam and was a regular seahorse smuggler. Following this, 90 seahorses and a TVS Excel vehicle were also seized,” said a ranger.
Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
