Bali, Indonesia:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today warned G-20 leaders that today’s fertilizer shortage could become tomorrow’s food crisis as he strongly advocated maintaining a “stable” supply chain for both fertilizer and food grains.
In his speech at the G-20 summit in Bali, Prime Minister Modi also highlighted how India ensured food security for its 1.3 billion citizens during the Covid-19 pandemic while also supplying food grains to many countries.
“The current shortage of fertilizer in terms of food security is also a huge crisis. Today’s fertilizer shortage is tomorrow’s food crisis, for which the world will not have a solution,” Prime Minister Modi told the meeting including US President Joe Biden, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and French President Emmanuel Macron.
“We need to build mutual agreement to keep the supply chain of both manure and food grains stable and secured. In India, we are promoting natural farming for sustainable food security and repopulating nutritious and traditional food grains like millet,” he said.
The Prime Minister addressed a session on food and energy security at the G20 summit.
Different parts of the world are facing the challenge of food security as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Ukraine is a major producer of wheat and the cessation of basic food exports has led to a global shortage.
“During the pandemic, India provided food security for its 1.3 billion citizens. At the same time, food grains were also supplied to many countries in need,” said Prime Minister Modi.
The prime minister said millet could also solve global malnutrition and hunger.
“We should all celebrate the International Year of Millet with great enthusiasm next year,” he said.
Prime Minister Modi also said that India’s energy security is also important for global growth as it is the fastest growing economy in the world.
“We should not promote restrictions on energy supply and stability in the energy market should be ensured. India is committed to clean energy and environment,” he said.
