Kolkata:
Photos of a TMC MLA sitting in a school principal’s chair in West Bengal’s Nadia district sparked controversy on Thursday, with the opposition BJP accusing the ruling party of destroying the autonomy of state-sponsored educational institutions.
Braja Kishore Goswami, the Trinamool Congress legislator of the Santipur assembly seat, told reporters he was “asked” by the principal to take her place on a recent visit to Santipur College.
Director Dr. Chandrima Bhattacharya was seen sitting on a bench next to the MLA.
Mr Goswami claimed that someone clicked on the photos and spread them on social media to defame him.
Commenting on the development, BJP President Sukanta Majumdar said: “This is the true scenario of the education sector in West Bengal under the TMC rule. Even a school principal has to bow to a ruling party MLA”.
The saffron party also criticized the TMC on its Facebook page, stating that “this is the new education model courtesy of Trinamool”.
Ms Bhattacharya could not be reached for comment.
