An employee of the Uttar Pradesh energy department died by suicide, reportedly after a senior official asked him to “send his wife for the night” if he wanted to be transferred.
Upset and humiliated, 45-year-old Gokul Prasad poured diesel on himself outside the junior engineer’s office in Lakhimpur and set himself on fire. He was rushed to a hospital, where he died on Sunday while undergoing treatment.
Junior engineer Nagendra Kumar and a clerk have been suspended and reported to the police.
In a video recorded after Gokul Prasad set himself on fire, he can be seen suffering immense pain as he explains what led him to the extreme step. He claims that the junior engineer and his assistant harassed him and that he approached the police but received no help.
In another video, his wife claims that the accused had tortured Gokul for the past three years. “He got depressed, started taking medicine, but they didn’t spare him. He was transferred to Aliganj and had trouble traveling. So he asked for a transfer closer to home. They said to him, ‘Leave your wife with us. sleep and we’ll transfer you,” she said.
She added that no one came forward to help him. “The junior engineer stood by and looked at it,” she said.
Senior Police Officer Sanjiv Suman said: “The lineman had alleged that the junior engineer demanded money and made vulgar statements when asking for transfer. We have registered a case. At the departmental level, the junior engineer has been suspended and an investigation has been ordered. The case is registered under the charge of suicide.”
