Pilibhit, UP:
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has declared the Ganges dolphin as the state aquatic animal.
CM Yogi stressed the need to maintain the purity of ponds and rivers. These dolphins are found in rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Chambal, Ghaghra, Rapti and Gerua. The estimated population of Ganges dolphins in Uttar Pradesh is estimated to be around 2000.
“It is important for both tourists and locals not to use plastic as it harms our water and nature,” said CM Yogi.
In addition, the CM emphasized the importance of training local residents in handling wild animals.
He also proposed training people from villages linked to the Tiger Reserve as guides, with the aim of creating employment and raising awareness within the community.
Teams from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Forest Department recently counted dolphins using GPS in Garh Ganga in Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh.
Speaking about the ongoing dolphin count in Garh Ganga, DFO Sanjay Kumar Mall said, “This is a campaign called Meri Ganga Meri Dolphin 2023 campaign. Under this, dolphin counting is being done in the Ganga river from near Muzaffarpur Barrage to the entire Narora Barrage. This involves counting by joint action of the teams of both WWF and Forest Department. It involves a method of counting so that there are two teams, each running at a speed of 10 kilometers per hour, and there is there will be a ten minute break in between. The entire team from Muzaffarpur to Narora Barrage will see how many dolphins submerge during this break.’
“That team watches the dolphin dive and records its GPS location, and then another team comes and records its GPS location. It shows that if it comes after an interval of 10 minutes, it is the same dolphin, if it does not come, if it is a different dolphin, the counting is done in the same way,” DFO Sanjay Kumar added.
The DFO also said that in the old data, 22 dolphins were counted in 2015, 30 dolphins in 2016, 32 dolphins in 2017, 33 dolphins in 2018, 35 dolphins in 2019 and 41 dolphins in 2020.
