New Tehri, Uttarakhand:
A couple died of suffocation after they went to sleep with the fireplace burning in a village here, officials said on Friday.
The incident took place in Dwari-Thapla village of Bhilangana area on Thursday evening. The couple Madan Mohan Semwal (52) and his wife Yashoda Devi (48) had come to the village to attend a wedding ceremony, said Dwari-Thapla village administrator Rinki Devi.
Around 11 p.m., they lit a fireplace because of the cold, took it to their room and fell asleep with the door closed. On Friday morning, their son went to wake them up, but no one answered the door, Ms Devi said.
After receiving no response for a while, the locals broke open the door and the couple was found dead on the bed, Ms Devi added. She said they died due to carbon monoxide gas produced by the fireplace smoke.
However, the locals did not inform the police. After speaking to the couple's son and daughter, they cremated the bodies in a Ghat.
Semwal was a clerk at the Government Inter College in Saraswatisain, the village administrator added.
