The vehicle that is deadly identified in the world's oldest marathon runner Fauja Singh in the Jalandhar district of Punjab and the driver of the vehicle, an SUV, will soon be arrested, the police said Tuesday (July 15, 2025).
Fauja Singh was 114, and the ironies could not be more tragic for the legend who came into line, just when others delayed.
The marathon runner collapsed to injuries on Monday (July 14, 2025) evening after he was hit by the vehicle in his indigenous bias village while he walked through the Jalandhar-Patankot Highway.
“We have identified the vehicle from a CCTV images. It is a Punjab -registered Toyota Fortuner. From the accident spot we found some fragments of the vehicle headlight. Then we traced the vehicle.
“In the CCTV statues, the part of the vehicle, found on the accident spot, was missing. It was the headlight fragment of the left side. The registration number was readable that we followed. He also said that the CCTV images were scanned on a long stretch of the highway and a time delay was also noticed when the SUV should have reached from one place to another.
After the incident, a FIR was registered against unknown driver under BNS sections 281 (riding or driving in a public way) and 105 (culpable murder did not kill murder), the police said.
Earlier in the day, some villagers said it was probably an SUV who hit Fauja Singh in a hit-and-run incident. He was thrown in the air for 5-7 feet, they claimed.
In the meantime, leaders who intersected the party lines were the death of the marathon runner, in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extraordinary because of his unique persona and the way in which he inspired the youth of India on the subject of fitness.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said on Tuesday that the experienced Marathonloper De Sikh community around the world proudly made his long -distance rowing.

Residents of Bias Village also mourned the death of the marathon runner.
Mahinder Singh, a villager, said that the place where the accident occurred would be about 400 meters from Fauja Singh's house.
“It is a highway … he was taken to a nearby hospital, but collapsed with injuries. We were told that an unknown vehicle threw him 5-7 feet,” he said.
“He was a very nice person. Everyone respected him a lot,” added the villager.
Another local Gurpreet Singh said that after the vehicle had hit Fauja Singh, he was immediately taken to the hospital.
“We took him to the hospital … The vehicle that saved him could be an SUV. He ran out of injuries to the head and other parts of the body. The whole village was dumped into sadness after his fall. Our village received worldwide recognition,” said Mr. Gurpreet.
On Tuesday, the Jalandhar police said that there are efforts to trace the wandering driver who had fled after the incident.
The last rites of Singh will probably be performed after a few days, a family member said PTI On Tuesday.
“We have many family members abroad, including in the UK and Canada. So it can take some time before they reach,” he said.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said the news about the fall of Fauza Singh is deeply sad.
“The life of a healthy lifestyle and reaching the age of 114, which seems impossible in today's era, he made possible,” said Mr. Saini in a post in Hindi on X.
“His indomitable energy and message from a healthy lifestyle are a source of inspiration for all of us. His journey journey will continue to inspire future generations to continue with discipline, determination and positive thinking,” said the Haryana CM.
The Punjab meeting brought a tribute to Fauja Singh on Tuesday. On the closing day of the special session of the meeting, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Ravjot Singh has moved a proposal to pay tribute to Singh in the house.
Opposition leader in Punjab Assemblee Partap Singh Bajwa and state congregation Amrinder Singh Raja Warring also cherished the death of the Marathon Runner. “Deeply sad due to the death of Sardar Fauja Singh jiThe world's oldest marathon runner. In a post on X, Punjab Congress Chief Warring wrote: “Vead about the early death of our legend #faujasingh Ji. He was an example of grit, determination and perseverance that marathons run in 100 years.” “More shocking is that he was the victim of a hit-and-run incident. We never know how long he may have lived more. A precious and an illustrious life has been removed. I hope the perpetrator will be identified and punished,” Mr Warring said in his post.
Pargat Singh, Congress MLA of Jalandhar Cantt and former Indian hockey captain, said: “Even at the age of 114 he continued to inspire generations with his strength and dedication. His legacy will forever live in the hearts of those fighting for a healthier and drug-free Punjab.” The widespread 114-year-old, whose career as a marathon runner started when he was 89 and pushed him to the status of a worldwide icon, who was nicknamed “Tornado” for his endurance and athletics.
Fauja Singh was born in a family of farmers in 1911 and was the youngest of four brothers and sisters. He became the first hundred years old to complete a marathon and earned several records while participating in international events.
He continued with marathons, including the famous in London, New York and Hong Kong, and inspired awe for clocking some brilliant timings for a 90-plus man born with weak legs.
One of the most memorable of his runs was in 2011 when he turned 100. The invitational -met in Toronto was mentioned in honor of him and he broke various world records for his age group.
The vulnerable man, who experienced many personal storms with his resilience and “casual”, had spent a better part of his running career in Great Britain and returned to his roots about three years ago after his retirement.
Last year, Singh joined Punjab Gulab Chand Kataria in a symbolic gesture in a walking cathon to spread consciousness against drug abuse.
