New Delhi:
Amid political turmoil over recent comments by UK Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi on India, Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday expressed concern about the “incubators and distributors” orchestrating “pernicious narratives” against the country.
According to him, the anti-India narratives are being spread to narrow the country’s growth trajectory and erode functional democracy and constitutional institutions.
The vice president called for “intelligentsia” and the people to be aware of such anti-Indian stories informed the government through a release.
“India is on the rise like never before and the rise is unstoppable. Global relevance and recognition of the nation are at an unprecedented level. This rise comes with challenges from within and without. It is here that the intelligentsia and media people come into the picture. We should all be aware of the rise of incubators and distributors of anti-Indian forces who are orchestrating pernicious narratives to narrow our growth trajectory and erode our functional democracy and constitutional institutions. It is absolutely necessary that we all believe in our nation and nationalism and engage in neutralizing such misfortunes,” said the vice president.
The vice president said this while addressing a rally after the release of a book ‘Governorpet to Governor’s House: A Hick’s Odyssey’ – a memoir of the former governor of Tamil Nadu, PS Ramamohan Rao in New Delhi. He praised the former governor for his contributions to public life and for sharing his insightful experiences in his memoir.
He noted that the “essence of democracy” is that “all are equally accountable to the law.” “No one can be given privileged treatment under the law and viewed through a different prism,” he said.
Suggesting that India is the most vibrant democracy, he said ‘equality before the law is something we cannot negotiate’.
Noting that the dynamics of governance would always be challenging, the vice president said it requires harmonized functioning of constitutional institutions – the legislature, executive and judiciary.
He asked for the smooth functioning of parliament amid the recent blockades, saying: “In democracy, the dynamics of governance will always be challenging, requiring harmonious functioning of constitutional institutions, it will always happen. The legislature, the executive and the judiciary – there will always be problems and we will never have a day when from now on we can say: there will be no problems, because we are a dynamic society, it will certainly happen. There is no room for confrontation or complaining by those who head these institutions Those who head the executive, legislature or judiciary cannot be complacent, they cannot confrontation. They have to work together and find solutions together.”
He reiterated that ‘the primacy of our Constitution determines the stability, harmony and productivity of democratic governance. “Parliament, reflecting the mandate of the people, is the ultimate and exclusive architect of the constitution,” he said.
Former Vice President of India Venkaiah Naidu, Governor of Haryana, Bandaru Dattatreya, former Governor of Tamil Nadu and the author, PS Ramamohan Rao, MPs, Shri K Keshav Rao, YS Chowdary and other dignitaries attended the event.
