MUMBAI FLOOD OF 2005: The year 2005 is recorded in the history books as the year when the financial capital of India suffered the most from the lunar season. Mumbai received more than 900mm of rain in just a few hours on July 26, 2005. To put the sheer magnanimity of the situation into perspective, Mumbai receives an annual rainfall of about 2000mm. But on that day, about 45 percent of the annual amount came to the city in just a few hours.

The city known for its 24×7 crowds came to a halt with roads and streets flooded. More than 1,000 people were reported to have lost their lives and nearly 14,000 were left homeless. The torrential rains were overwhelming for the city’s drainage systems. The cloudburst brought the city to shackles.

The uproar started around 2 p.m. when a severe storm hit the country of the Mumbai metropolitan region. Shortly after, the lifeblood of the city, the locals came to a standstill. Thousands of working people and students were trapped and unable to reach their homes for more than 24 hours.
The incident highlighted the gaping hole in the city’s disaster management and preparedness. Due to the worst flooding the city has ever experienced, a detailed report was made up in 2006 that served as a handbook for the municipal corporation for the following years. In addition, the shortcomings of the 2005 floods played a crucial role in the drafting of the 2009 national guidelines for urban flood development.
Fortunately, nearly a decade and a half later, Mumbai has not seen the horrors of 2005. Heavy showers were an annual phenomenon, but the authorities were better prepared. In 2022, heavy rainfall was reported in the starting week of July. Several areas were also flooded, but the city managed to maintain the crowds.
