A rare medical case of Motihari in Bihar left people shocked when a fetus was found in the stomach of a 40-day-old baby. The rare phenomenon is referred to in medical terminology as ‘fetus in fetu’ or the presence of a fetus in the child’s stomach. The diagnosis was made after the child had an inflammation near his abdomen that prevented him from urinating properly. The baby was operated on, after which he is in a stable condition.
Fetus in fetu (FIF) is a rare birth defect, in which the malformed and parasitic fetus is contained within the body of its twin brother.
How To Identify Abdominal Growth Is Fetus In Fetu?
In order to classify an abdominal growth as fetus in fetu rather than a tumor, there are several characteristics that are taken into account. Fetus in fetu is a benign growth of embryological origin, which is located behind the abdominal wall of the host twins. To diagnose a fetus in fetu, there must be evidence of body plan organization, including vertebrae, limbs, and organ tissues.
Where is it found?
dr. Priya Deshpande, consultant for maternal fetal medicine at Motherhood Hospital, Kharghar, said: “It is most commonly found in the retroperitoneum, the tissues in the abdominal wall. Atypical sites such as a skull and sacrum have also been reported in the literature. Most cases appear in infancy.” She further revealed that while fetus-in-fetus is usually present as a single parasitic fetus, cases of multiple fetuses have also been reported.
Diagnosis of fetus in fetus?
Diagnosis is often made with ultrasound, plain radiography, computed tomography (CT), or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Treatment of fetus in fetu?
Since it is considered a benign disease, surgical treatment of fetus-in-fetu is curative.
