The human body needs iron to make hemoglobin, which helps red blood cells carry oxygen through the blood vessels. Still, iron deficiency, which occurs when the body doesn’t have enough of the mineral iron, is considered one of the most common nutrient deficiencies in humans. An iron deficiency in the body, called anemia, results in a lack of oxygen to tissues and muscles, hindering their proper functioning. It further causes various symptoms mainly affecting the skin, hair and nails. Various signs on the skin, hair and nails indicate a possibility of iron deficiency.
Hair loss
Iron deficiency makes it difficult to transport oxygen throughout the body. As a result, nail and hair growth is inhibited. You might also notice their hair thinning and falling out. If you notice your hair falling out around the hairline, crown, and mid-section of your hair, it could indicate a serious iron deficiency. It becomes more apparent if the hair is wet or if you stand in a bright spot.
Dry and damaged hair
Hair becomes rather dry and damaged due to iron deficiency. As hemoglobin levels fall, hair cells do not receive enough oxygen for effective hair growth.
Paler inner eyelids
The inner part of the eyelids is usually bright red in color. However, with moderate to severe iron deficiencies, the inside of the eyelids become pale. This is the first thing doctors check when looking for signs of iron deficiency.
Brittle nails
Another sign of iron deficiency is brittle fingernails or koilonychia. An iron deficiency will cause your nails to crack and flake easily, which later take on a curved shape with a dip in the center and edges.
Pale skin
The pink or light red color in your palms or cheeks is due to the hemoglobin in the red blood cells. An iron deficiency causes your skin to turn pale.
