On average, a person spends about a third of their life in bed, mostly watching sitcoms, sleeping, relaxing, or probably reading. In general, it is fair to say that a person spends the most time in their bed than in any other place in their home. But it’s surprising that the place where we spend half our lives is the place we don’t clean. And we mean the mattress. We just change the sheet and pillowcases and consider our beds clean, forgetting that maintaining the hygiene of our mattresses is just as important.
Nitin Gupta, Executive Director, Springfit Mattress shares 5 simple and quick techniques on how to ensure your mattress is properly cleaned:
Vacuum your mattress
This is the first thing you should actually do. Vacuum the top and edges of your mattress after removing your sheets, covers, and mattress protector. Vacuuming helps you get rid of all the dirt, pet hair, and dust that has accumulated over time, as well as the food crumbs from late-night snacking sessions.
Keep your mattress stain-free and rust-free
You should clean your mattress based on the type of stain. It is possible that you accidentally spilled red wine, tea or coffee on the bed. Always try to clean these areas immediately as it will be more challenging to remove once they are dry and have developed a chemical bond with the material. Protein-based stains such as perspiration, urine or blood can be easily removed.
Gupta shares some techniques for getting stains out of a mattress:
- You can combine one part hydrogen peroxide, liquid dish soap, and baking soda. Treat the affected area by combining them in a spray bottle. Use a clean cloth to wipe off the stains.
- Use natural enzyme cleaners that are non-toxic and chemically break down stains and odors. They are easily available in the market.
- Combine salt and lemon juice to form a paste. Apply the mixture to the stain and wait 30 to 60 minutes before removing it. Use a clean cloth to remove the salt. Also Read: Here’s The Full List Of Long Weekends In 2023: Plan Your Vacations In Advance Now
Use Baking Soda to deodorize the mattress
This is a magic trick that can be used to make it smell nice. Sprinkle a thin layer of baking soda on the outside of your mattress and let it sit for a few hours. Your mattress will be clean and smell fresh. It will also absorb any extra liquid from the stain removal procedure. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll need to vacuum up the baking soda and make sure it’s properly removed throughout.
Try to keep your mattress in the fresh air
It’s not possible to move your mattress every time for that extra layer of sunshine, but if you do, it’s a fantastic way to get rid of bacteria naturally.
Do not forget to wash sheets, covers and pillowcases
While you’re cleaning your mattress, give your bedding, sheets, and pillowcases a nice wash. Germs can be found in the bedspreads that cover and shield the mattress. Dust and mites can be removed by washing them well in a bubble bath.
Mattress cleaning is just as important as cleaning your bedding and covers. One should clean the mattress at least once every six months, but try to do this process every three months if possible. Clean the stain right away as well.
No doubt cleaning a mattress will extend its life and make it more comfortable to sleep on, but all good things have an expiration date. About every eight years or so, think about buying a new mattress. Sagging of the mattress and body impressions show that it no longer offers sufficient support.
