Mahatma Gandhi played a vital role in freeing the country from British colonial rule. He led various movements such as the non-cooperative movement, the Khilafat movement, the Quit India movement and so on. One such movement that played an important role in shaping the history of the Indian freedom struggle was Salt March. Salt March, popularly known as Dandi March, began on March 12, 1930.
The march was organized by Mahatma Gandhi from his Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad in Gujarat to the village of Dandi in the coastal region of the state.
As we enter the 92nd anniversary of the revolutionary movement, let’s take a look at some of the facts that made this movement historic:
- Dandi March was a 24-day march that began on March 12 and ended on April 6, 1930.
- It is also called Dandi Satyagraha and was non-violent.
- The march started with just 80 people, but until it reached its destination, the number rose to 50,000.
- People walked 390 km along with Gandhi ji to protest the salt laws.
- The mass movement was one of the first movements led by Gandhi ji to speak out against the bad rules of the British.
- The march began to protest against British rule that forbade the Indians from collecting or selling salt. Due to the monopoly of the British government, they sold salt with high taxes on it and Indians were forced to buy from them.
- After reaching Dandi, Gandhi ji violated the salt law imposed by the British government by illegally producing salt on the coasts.
- After Gandhi ji’s move, several people started breaking the law by illegally producing, selling and buying salt. This gave birth to the mass civil disobedience movement.
- Interestingly, after Gandhi ji’s huge step to break the law, no one was arrested. Even the movement received national and international attention. The movement ran for about two months.
- In May 1930, when the movement became hugely popular and the British thought it was their defeat, several people were arrested, including Jawahar Lal Nehru and Mahatma Gandhi.
- By the end of 1930, more than 60,000 people were arrested. However, in January 1931, Gandhi ji was released from prison.
- After he got out of prison, Gandhi Ji held meetings with Lord Irwin, which gave life to the Gandhi-Irwin Pact signed on March 5, 1931.
