As the Covid-19 pandemic turned countless lives around the world, it also brought to the surface the many benefits of Ayurveda and traditional Indian medicines. Now, by giving a big boost to the international use of traditional Indian treatments, the government is coming soon with an AYUSH visa category for foreigners.
The initiative was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the inaugural session of the three-day Global AYUSH Investment and Innovation Summit 2022, held at Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar. The inauguration was also attended by the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Jugnauth, and the Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus.
The new AYUSH visa is designed to facilitate travel for international tourists seeking traditional treatments in India. “With this visa, it will make it easier to travel to access AYUSH therapies (in India),” said PM Modi.
Apart from the visa, Prime Minister Modi also said that the government will take various initiatives and activities to promote the AYUSH sector. AYUSH stands for Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy, the six traditional Indian healing methods.
Among the initiatives, the Prime Minister said a digital portal will be created to connect farmers growing medicinal plants to the AYUSH product. He also announced that an AYUSH brand will be launched soon to bring authenticity to the AYUSH products.
PM Modi stressed that products “screened using the latest technology” will receive the AYUSH seal of approval. He further emphasized that this will help people gain confidence when purchasing AYUSH products.
PM Modi underlined that the ‘Heal in India’ initiative has the potential to become the big brand of this decade. He noted that traditional medicine has helped Kerala boost tourism and that power is all over India.
Speaking of tourism, Prime Minister Modi stressed that India has become a popular destination for medical tourism and investment opportunities in the sector have also increased.
