Hence, serum magnesium does not always accurately reflect the body’s total magnesium reserves. Magnesium also regulates vascular tone, atherogenesis, thrombosis and vascular calcification. Therefore, it may have a significant impact on the etiology of cardiovascular disease.
Since the kidneys play a key role in maintaining the balance of magnesium in the body, kidney disease can cause both magnesium overload and magnesium deficiency, which can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.
