Dussehra is celebrated on October 24.
During Dussehra, his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran are also burnt along with Ravan.
Dussehra is a Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil. It is celebrated on the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwini month. It is believed that in Tretayuga, Lord Ram killed Ravan to win the freedom of his wife, Goddess Sita. To celebrate the victory of humanity on this day, Hindu devotees practice Ravan Dahan on this day. It symbolizes the victory of truth.
This year people are confused about the correct date and time of Ravana Dahan on this day. Some believe it is October 23, while others argue that October 24 is the correct date for Dussehra. In this context, News18 had a special conversation about the same with the astrologer of Deoghar in Jharkhand named Nand Kishor Mudgal.
According to Nanad Kishor Mudgal, Ravan Dahan will be celebrated on October 24 this year. The auspicious time for Ravana Dahan starts from 5:22 PM to 6:59 PM, the astrologer said. According to him, two auspicious yogas are also formed on October 24, due to which this day is considered as the right day for the Dussehra festival. The first is Ravi Yoga while the second is Vriddhi Yoga. These are considered as the promising combination for Ravan Dahan.
During Vijayadashmi, along with Ravan, his son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran are also burnt. The Ravan Dahan is found across India, but not in Deoghar, said Nand Kishor Mudgal. He explained the reason behind it. He said that during the Treta Yuga, Ravan pleased Lord Shiva with his penance and asked him to come to his native town Lanka.
Lord Shiva agreed and decided to go to Lanka from Kailash. When Ravan brought Lord Shiva from Kailash to Lanka in the form of a Shiva Linga, it is believed that due to a conspiracy of gods, Shiva Linga was installed in Deoghar. People started worshiping Lord Shiva because of Ravan and so they do not burn Ravan for this reason.
On this day, people do poojas at their homes and wear festive clothes. Several Ramleela events are also held in large stadiums and fields. The people also attend Durga Pooja on this day.
