Oily skin, acne breakouts and uneven skin tone. Sigh! The monsoons have arrived and brought a lot of skin problems. While the rainy season is a respite from the blistering heat that engulfs the northern region of the Indian subcontinent in the summer months, it’s the skin that bears the brunt of humidity.
But the good news is that there are many ways to combat these skin problems during monsoons. From indulging in homemade remedies to choosing the right skincare products, we bring you a list of must-dos that will help protect your skin from the damaging effects of the monsoon.
First let’s talk about how to recognize oily skin
– Cleanse your face with a gentle face wash and leave your skin without moisturizer or serum for a few hours
– If your skin feels oily and shiny in the T-zone, you can be sure of oily or combination skin
– Oily skin type is usually characterized by blackheads, acne, pimples and uneven skin tone
Monsoon Skincare
Before we talk about building a skin care routine for the monsoons, it would be wise to discuss the basics of skin care during this season:
- Have a healthy diet as the rainy months are very prone to bacteria and other problems
- Take care of your gut health
- Say goodbye to make it up for a while because it will clog your pores
Step-by-Step Monsoon Skin Care Routine
– Cleanse: Start the process by cleansing your skin. “Don’t be too hard on your skin, though, or you’ll create an unbalanced pH level that will eventually affect the texture of your skin,” says Dr. Gagan Bhatia, founder of Uniqaya
– Tone: toners should never be skipped during monsoons. Toners are necessary for cleaning the leftover dirt and they also help in minimizing the pores. One can also look for toners based on natural ingredients, such as rose water, tea tree oil and aloe vera.
– Moisturize: The third step is to lather a moisturizer onto your skin. Choose a hydrating, lightweight moisturizer to hydrate your oily skin. “Make sure the moisturizer you choose is oil-free,” says Dr. Sirisha Singh, dermatologist. Also make sure it is non-comedogenic.
– Exfoliate: Exfoliating helps a lot in removing excess oil and also removes the stubborn dirt deposits. This step is not supposed to be followed in chronological order, but it can be done before hydrating.
– Sunscreen: The last but most important step is to make sure you apply sunscreen. Applying sunscreen is very important during the rainy season. Often people skip using sunscreen because there is no sunlight. But UV rays can also pass through the clouds. “It is recommended to use a matte, non-greasy formula that does not weigh down the skin. One should consider sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 40,” adds Bhatia.
