With advances in science, many treatments have been developed to greatly improve the chances of conceiving a baby. These treatments include fertility drugs, hormonal drugs, or surgery including in vitro fertilization (IVF). Adding to the many methods that can improve the fertility rate in women is one method called egg freezing.
In modern times, when there is a lot of awareness about the procedure, many women choose to freeze their eggs between the ages of 20-30 to extend their biological cycle for a variety of reasons, be it career or emotional stability. Here’s everything you need to know about egg freezing.
What is Egg Freeze?
Known medically as cryopreservation of mature eggs, egg freezing is one method that can save women’s chances of conceiving in the future. This happens when eggs harvested from a woman’s ovaries are frozen infertile and stored for later use. Using Vitro fertilization, a frozen egg can be combined with sperm in a lab and implanted in the uterus to increase the chances of pregnancy. While interacting with HT Lifestyle, Senior Consultant in Fertility and IVF Services, Dr. Priti Gupta from Delhi states that frozen eggs yield the same results when it comes to delivering healthy babies.
She said: “Egg freezing, also known as human egg cryopreservation, is a procedure used to remove and safely store a woman’s eggs. This allows women to use their own eggs at a later date. egg donors to step in when natural conception can be more difficult or unlikely. Whether the eggs are frozen or fresh, they deliver the same results when it comes to delivering healthy babies.”
When should eggs be frozen?
According to the expert, the pregnancy rate increases and it is considered best if eggs are frozen before the age of 35. She explained the term vitrification, which allows more than 85% of frozen eggs to survive the reheating method. Therefore, it is ideal to freeze 20-30 eggs while they are still of top quality to increase reproductive flexibility in the future.
What is Clinical Egg Freezing?
According to Dr. Priti Gupta eggs can be frozen for clinical or social purposes. When it comes to clinically, the process becomes useful when a woman is undergoing medical challenges, such as in the fight against cancer that requires radiation and chemotherapy. In addition, there are cases where women have a family history of early menopause. She said: “Clinical egg freezing is being considered for women who have medical problems such as cancer requiring chemotherapy or radiation, women with low ovarian reserve or a family history of early menopause, etc.”
What is social egg freezing?
This is performed when a woman chooses to freeze her eggs for non-medical reasons such as career growth, emotional and financial stability, and more. The doctor explained: “Social Egg Freezing means that a woman can keep her eggs for non-medical reasons, given her career growth and studies, is unable to find a perfect mate, and is not ready emotionally or financially. “
