Endometriosis is a painful condition in which tissue that resembles the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. Painful periods, pain during intercourse, excessive bleeding and infertility are some of the symptoms of endometriosis.
But endometriosis, along with all the other problems, also causes acne. The condition sometimes makes your skin prone to inflammation and increases the chance of blackheads and pimples. dr. Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist & dermato-surgeon, The Esthetic Clinics, sheds more light in an interaction with Hindustan Times.
Dr Rinky said that endometriosis acne affects only about 1 percent of women. She said that while it’s not a common symptom, “it is the most frustrating, visible, and confidence-destroying symptom of endo.” She added that the main cause of endometriosis is “hormonal imbalance, which is a major aggravation of acne and other reasons include excessive sebum production that clogs pores.”
Some of the precautions and treatment methods that Dr. Rinky can help include:
- Acne dot hydrocolloid dressings and benzoyl peroxide products are common options for the home treatment of cystic and other types of acne.
- Use a cloth dipped in warm water (known as a warm compress) to control inflammation.
- Do not opt for acne and pimples.
- Use retinol in your nighttime skincare routine after consulting your dermatologist.
- If the acne becomes too soft or you see fluid draining, see a dermatologist who can use steroid injections to control acne and reduce inflammation.
You should also know that:
- A good night’s sleep (at least 8 hours) and regular exercise help regulate hormones and control acne.
- Too many cosmetic products can damage the skin and increase the risk of inflammation and acne. Choose products that do not contain parabens, sulfate, minerals and are comedogenic.
- Drink plenty of water as it helps in removing toxins from the body by reducing pimples and blemishes. One should drink at least 3 liters per day.
