Needless to say, brain health is an important topic that is becoming increasingly important to our well-being. Our brain, as the control center of our body, plays an important role and, like our body, it ages over time. However, there are several ways to keep the brain healthy. Focusing on proper nutrition is one of the most important ways to take care of the brain.
dr. Uma Naidoo, a nutritional psychiatrist, shared a few foods that are best for an aging brain. Let’s see:
In her Instagram post, she beautifully explained how you can optimize your brain aging through nutrition. “Looking for the fountain of youth for your brain? Start incorporating these foods into your diet to work towards a healthier brain and fight many of the ways our brains can become injured over time, including free radicals, decreased blood flow and more,” she wrote.
According to her, there are five best foods for an aging brain that you should know:
- Evoo or extra virgin olive oil: Dr. Naidoo believes that extra virgin olive oil is linked to a lower incidence of Alzheimer’s because it increases autophagy in brain cells. For a “brain-healthy” salad dressing, she suggests pairing it with Dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar.
- Herbs: According to Dr. Naidoo, turmeric with a pinch of black pepper, cinnamon, saffron, rosemary and ginger will help promote healthy brain aging and memory.
- OMEGA-3: “EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids found in fatty fish such as wild-caught salmon that help protect the brain from aging,” she added. ALA, the omega 3 found in plant sources such as nuts and seeds, can be converted to EPA and DHA in small amounts.
- Leafy greens: Dietitians and experts often recommend eating leafy greens because they are high in folic acid, one of the most important vitamins for brain health. dr. Naidoo also recommends vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard, arugula, and dandelion greens in her post. She claims that eating these vegetables will help you maintain cognitive integrity as you age.
- Rainbow Veggies: Plant foods of different colors are said to have different brain-healthy nutrients and fiber. dr. Uma Naidoo has also suggested incorporating plant-based diets into our meals to improve our cognitive longevity.
